The effects of packaging and the impacts made are visible almost everywhere. From street side litter to the need for multiple bins and rubbish dumps the evidence is large, and very real. Packaging is important, it protects products from damage, ensures hygiene, provides information for the user and helps consumer convenience and trust. It ticks all these boxes yet it fails to be of any asset to us if it does not contribute to keeping our planet a clean and healthy.
A recent visit to Melbourne demonstrated Race Day celebrations are more trouble than they are worth with packaging in all shapes and forms left outside the venues (see photo). Our society is wrapped in packaging for fear of obtaining a bruise, yet do we ever pause to think of the impact that will be much larger than a single bruise. From children to groceries, with OHNS it is become second nature to smother our possessions and protect them from the great outdoors but the question is how we do this. With concepts such as plans for a Zero Waste Future and Waste Management Hierachy campaigns the future could look a lot brighter.
As consumers it is up to us to make the sustainable decisions, become more aware and channel production lines in the right directions.
